Welcome to the Audience of the Future Live programme at SXSW 2022 – a series of workshops exploring ground breaking projects and creative technologies, as well as networking events and showcases co-hosted with Arts Council England’s Future Art & Culture, Unboxed and Department for International Trade.
The programme also features an exclusive first view of four immersive media prototypes developed as part of the first-ever UK-Canada Immersive Exchange, at the SXSW XR Experience in Austin, Texas from 13 – 15 March.
Additionally, the makers of FRAMERATE will present an exclusive preview within the prestigious Art Program at SXSW on 12 March.

FRAMERATE’s hypnotic imagery bears witness to landscapes in flux. The impact of human behaviour and the immense force of nature unfolds around you across an array of screens. FRAMERATE invites you to observe in another way. To think and feel in another time scale: geological time, seasonal time, tidal time. To contemplate change and the pace of change. This is a space where your perspective might shift. ScanLAB Projects is an award-winning creative studio that digitises the world, transforming temporary moments and spaces into compelling immersive experiences, artworks and films. The studio’s work has featured at major film festivals, been broadcast internationally and exhibited at world-leading arts institutions. FRAMERATE is commissioned by SXSW and is part of the Future Art and Culture programme produced by British Underground with the support of Arts Council England. Development was supported by Innovate UK’s AotF Programme. FRAMERATE is an exclusive preview of a larger body of installation-based work due to be launched across late 2022/2023. UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK started with £120m of public investment into an ambitious programme intended to celebrate creativity in all its forms, delivered in partnership between all four UK governments. A groundbreaking R&D process resulted in 10 acts of boundary-defying mass public engagement that exist at the intersections of science, technology and art. Dreamachine is an immersive experience designed to explore the limitless potential of the human mind that creates vivid illusions, kaleidoscopic patterns and explosions of colour unique to each participant. Tour de Moon reimagines our lunar satellite as symbol of radical imagination, giving rise to digital and live adventures unlike anything seen before. UK & Canadian XR Project Pitching Power Hour−
UK-Canada Immersive Exchange is a new immersive talent development and co-production fund for creative practitioners and producers, supported by UK-Canada Immersive Exchange, supported by Arts Council England, Canada Council for the Arts, Canada Media Fund, CFC Media Lab, StoryFutures Academy and UK Research and Innovation.
These international AR, VR and immersive audio co-productions focused on developing new immersive narrative experiences across two territories during COVID-19.
Learn about a curated selection of completed XR prototype projects and possible funding and collaboration opportunities to bring them to market. The AR, VR and immersive audio initiatives are created by a community of innovators in immersive storytelling from both Canada and the UK.

INTERCHANGE is a next-generation Metaverse experience designed for an audience to jump through a physical portal into a virtual world. Audiences can follow favourite fictional characters into a story world and experience real-time interactions with the system using mixed reality technologies to bridge the virtual/physical divide. Origin Story: The Making of a Hybrid Experience−
Lost Origin is a unique live immersive adventure fusing technology and performance. Audiences weave their way through themed rooms working as undercover investigators to crack a mystery. It is the first major integration of Magic Leap technology and mixed reality physical & digital interaction in a large scale theatrical setting. In this session the director, set designer and technologist tell the story of the production revealing the challenges and opportunities of creative cross-discipline collaboration. StoryTrails is a UK-wide project giving creative practitioners access to film archives (including the BBC and BFI) and cutting-edge immersive technologies from Niantic in one of the biggest people’s history projects ever undertaken, as part of UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK. This workshop explores how the StoryFutures team are developing formats and a ‘kit of parts’ for creatives new to immersive storytelling, enabling them to realise the possibilities of lidar scanning, augmented reality and installation media.
