Liminal Materials: The Cloud Project

Liminal Materials: The Cloud Project

Design Foundations

Aim

Liminal Materials: The Cloud Project explores various techniques to create an artificial volumetric cloud to generate desirable immersive experiences, de-risk innovation pipelines and find potential new applications for the Creative Industries sector.

Summary

Target Audience

A controllable cloud form can be used in a range of ways within the creative sector:
as a feature within immersive experiences
as part of multimedia approaches
combined with lights (LEDs, lasers)
as a moving projection surface to simulate 2D or 3D visuals
to mask or frame physical architecture

Outcome

The Squidsoup team has grown, and are in talks with a well known gallery to create a bespoke artwork based on the Liminal Material investigations. Two unsuccessful attempts to get further funding in 2020 to develop the project has meant that development has slowed significantly.
However, the team has solicited a producer to explore other markets, which has informed their understanding of how industries recognise commercial value in technology projects. It also informed their creative thinking and investigations of novel materials.
